Always Something New

THEME PACKAGE

COVER

Unlike a lot of programs, we don't use a professional designer at all. The entire cover, from concept to finalization, was us editors.  With "Always Something New," we wanted to reflect current, modern styles, so we went with modern font and colors. We picked the "NEW" font, Codec, particularly for it's glyphs. We decided to do a gradient, as it was a trending element that felt fresh with the bright colors.

End Sheets

One thing I emphasize is end sheets that actually introduce more elements to the theme package.

On the front end sheet, I introduced the use of lines and cutouts. We were fans of big, bold type, so I made "NEW" go bleed on both the left and right. This was to also give students a clearer space to sign each others' books. With cutouts, we were fans of them interacting with other things, so I put Brooklyn Sanders in front of the lines and "NEW," foreshadowing the pull quote design.

On the back end sheet, I repeated the giant type, this time with the "?" that gives signing space and draws the eye.

Title

We went through several photos before landing on this one. Again, I brought back the cutout interacting with the line, and I also introduce the cutout standing out from the background with a white transparent box, something I repeated for all of the theme pages to help bring focus to the subject.

Opening

The opening pulls from the end sheet. I repeated the large text bleeding on both sides, making it feel like a complete type as you flip across them. We went through tens of photos, and I went to several events with the goal of getting a theme photo.

Additionally, the gradient is pulled across the three spreads on the type and the line at the bottom, making them one piece. The colors are in the order coordinating to their sections, hinting how each divider will transition colors with the bottom line.

The line at the bottom hints at the folio design, a thicker line that goes across the entire bottom of a spread.

Dividers

As mentioned above, the lines on the bottom reflect the folio and signify the transition from one section color to the next. The headline reflects the cover and title spread.

Closing

The closing mirrors the opening. We've made it to the green, and now we're gonna smooth back to the closing page, which features the whole gradient, like the title page.
